I Love To Read & Crochet

Yesterday I relaxed out on our screened in porch reading a good book while snuggled up in my ripple throw. As much as I love to crochet my favorite hobby is reading. 

 I grew up with a father and two brothers who liked to read too. 

 My brothers were into science fiction so I grew up loving anything sci fi!

Now I get to talk about my second hobby - crocheting. I've mastered Edie's #86 and started working the border in green modifying the flower placement to be further apart so that each flower is placed between each granny rose square.

I didn't want the little green flowers to compete with the white granny rose squares.

Once the green flower border is finished I will add an edging in red and white I think.

Back to reading - I'm waiting for the latest book in the series, "A Song of Ice and Fire," to come out in paperback. 

 The TV series, "Game of Thrones," is doing a fantastic job of following Mr. Martin's books.

We found a wonderful non-chain book store in a neighboring town and I iPhoned several books that looked interesting.

This book appears to be written from the doggie's point of view.

I like to read anything about Rome and/Romans.

Historical novels are my cup of tea and the thicker the book the better!

Time to read and crochet!

Our Wall of Books

OUR WALL OF BOOKS!

This is the view of one wall in our upstairs "Paperback" room.  

Can you tell we love to read!

We have books in just about every room in our home.

We recently cleaned out this room and gave around 800 paperbacks to Good Will.  

Some were so old the pages were yellowed and/or falling out.

My Hubby put up these shelves (I sanded them!).

They are just the right size for paperbacks.

Believe it or not we have two more bookcases in this room filled with science fiction paperbacks.

One of my favorite authors...Taylor Caldwell.  

You must read "A Prologue to Love"...it is wonderful and sad at the same time.

I read it in 9th grade - that started my love of this author's works.

The beat up book with the rubber band is her masterpiece, "Captains and Kings". 

You may remember that was a TV miniseries many years ago with the fantastic Richard Jordan.

Apparently it's available on DVD now.

I'll have to put an order into Amazon!

With all the junk that comes out of Hollyweird these days...why can't they do a miniseries on Colleen McCullough's "Masters of Rome" series?

You probably watched and/or read "Thorn Birds" another McCullough masterpiece.   

Some more well read books from John Jakes.  

You may also remember the great 1985 miniseries "North and South," with our beloved Patrick Swayze, based on John Jakes book of the same name.   In case you didn't know...there's more than one book to this historical series! 

I have "North and South" on DVD! 

This week we plan to go to Ikea to look at bookcases for the remaining wall without any books.  We like their "Billy" bookcases.  I want to move some of our reference hardcover books upstairs to make more room on our Danish wall unit in our living room for newer hardcover books.

Vertical Book Shelf

It's a beautiful sunny day here with low humidity.  We turned the A/C off and opened the doors and windows.  It's wonderful!

Take a look at this vertical book shelf unit.     

We love books!

Not only do I love to read but so does my Hubby.  

When you have as many books as we do you need some way of keeping track of your inventory.  Several years ago we purchased a scanner inventory computer program, called IntelliScanner.  We found it's a great way to organize our books and movies.  So far we have inventoried all of our DVDs.  But....not all of our books.  We have collected hundreds thousands of books over the 37 years we have been married.  I do enter any new books we have purchased into our inventory program but we have no idea how many books we have at this moment.  Someday I hope to get all of them scanned and entered.  Recently, after cleaning out our upstairs paperback library, we took about 800 science fiction paperback books to Good Will.  I organized all the remaining paperback books and now we can see what we have at a glance.  But that's just one area where we have books stored.     

I love this vertical book shelving...and the turquoise color too.  If I get rid of the high stool we have in our kitchen I could put one of these up and put my cookbooks on it.  It's one of those decorating thoughts I have that I haven't acted on yet.  I think I've seen a similar unit at Ikea.  Heck, it would be easy just to make one from scratch I bet. 

Other news...our old GE dishwasher (15 plus years) wasn't working properly so we had a fancy new stainless steel one (Kitchen Aid) installed today by Lowe's.   This is the second appliance we have bought and had installed by Lowe's and we are very happy with their service.  Just our opinion - we aren't being paid to say this.  We have never had such a quiet dishwasher...we can barely tell it is running.  

Next week we take our travel van back to the RV dealership to have the toilet replaced.  It's a brand new unit so the work is under warranty.  We'll both have to drive up and leave the van for the work overnight.   I wish the dealership was closer - it's an hour and 1/2 to two hour drive up there - but it is what it is.  

We have campground reservations to go to a little 4 day rally just for small travel vans (i.e., RVs categorized as "Bs") like ours at Hershey, PA during the Hershey RV Show in the middle of September.  At this rate that will be our first overnight trip in the van.

Love of Reading

Another favorite past time of mine is reading.  Hubby and I both love to read so we have lots of books.  Everywhere...in our house...you will find books.  

We dedicated a bedroom upstairs as a library and it is filled with mostly our paperback pocket books.  Another bedroom has a sofa sleeper in it and we called it the "Teddy Bear" room because it holds my teddy bear collection on book shelves.  It's also where I have many of my books stored (...that my hubby isn't interested in).  We have a Danish solid teak 3 unit bookcase in our living room that is completely filled with books.  There is no room to put any decorating items on it (as designers love to do).  And we have two Danish teak book units in our family room that store books and other things.  The last place to find books is in our finished basement.  

We don't know how many books we have altogether but we have a hand held scanner and inventory computer program that we bought a few years ago and of the books bought since then we currently have 700 books in inventory.   My goal is to scan all of our books someday.  We are in the process of de-cluttering our basement and we are going through one book wall unit down there to see what books we can throw out and/or donate to Good Will.   

The books above (except for the Blogging book) have been purchased to read on our upcoming RV trip to Alaska this summer.  These aren't hubby's selection they're mine.   We do overlap on some books that we both enjoy reading.   I've started to read Blogging for Bliss by Tara Frey and like it very much.  Hopefully I will learn something to help my blogging out.
